5 tips to make your phone battery last longer

If you’ve owned your smartphone for over a year, you may have noticed the battery life isn’t what it used to be, which is to be expected. Lithium batteries used to power our devices wear down over time, and as a result, decreases the number of hours our phones can be awake for.

Many will decide to pack in their phone for a new and improved version, but if you’d rather save your cash and help the environment at the same time, there are plenty of steps you can take to prolong the battery life of your beloved phone. These are:

Keep it away from heat and cold

Temperature plays a massive part in your phone’s battery capabilities. If your phone gets too hot or too cold, it can strain the battery and shorten its lifespan. Leaving it in your car, where it can get extremely hot in the sun or exposed to below-freezing temperatures in the winter, is a prime culprit.

Avoid draining your battery

Historically, letting your phone battery drain to 0% and recharging it all the way to 100% was best-practice for prolonging your battery’s lifespan. However, newer phone batteries work in a different way. Today’s phone batteries get stressed if the battery is drained or recharged fully. In fact, phone batteries are at their happiest when kept above 20% and below 90%.

To ensure your battery stays within the recommended capacities, short charges are recommended. To be precise, a battery of 50% capacity is ideal.

Turn down your screen brightness

A smartphone’s screen is the component which typically uses the most battery. Turning down the screen’s brightness will save energy and utilise less battery. Most phones nowadays will have self-adjusting brightness settings built in on the device, so when the natural lighting drops, so does the brightness on your phone.

Reduce the screen timeout

If your phone is left unattended for a period of time, usually a minute or two, it will automatically lock. You can save battery by reducing the time before the phone locks. By default, Apple set their screen timeout for 2 minutes, but by simply reducing that to a minute or even 30 seconds, you’ll be saving heaps of energy.

Delete Facebook and use your browser instead

Surprisingly, Facebook’s app is one of the biggest battery hogs around. Facebook’s video autoplay feature, for example, automatically plays videos on your phone without the need to click on them, which uses mobile data and energy. Deleting the app and using the browser version, which is almost the exact same user experience, will prolong your phone’s battery life.
