Will foldable phones revolutionise the smartphone market?

Smartphones have already transformed our lives in many ways – from virtual assistants, instant messaging and having access to the internet more or less wherever you are. But the technology is about to take another giant leap forward, with the recent release of foldable phones.

Folding phones are becoming a major new trend, and we’re not talking about the old flip phones. Samsung and Huawei are some of the first manufacturers to roll out these modern models, with screens that can fold out into a book-like device to become the size of a tablet.

Are they worth the investment?

The potential with folding phones is endless, particularly for business use. Navigating on Google Maps can be viewed on a bigger screen, as well as conference calling and viewing media files. It’s also great for multitasking – checking your emails in a smaller window whilst browsing the internet on a larger window, for example.

Where can I get a folding phone?

The biggest player to release a folding phone is Samsung with the Galaxy Fold. Although, they could be faced with tough competition from the Huawei Mate X, which is believed to have a bigger fold-out screen and is a slimmer device when folded.

How much does a folding phone cost?

According to Samsung, their Galaxy Fold has a price tag of $1,980 (£1,515). Since the announcement, the reaction to the luxury price tag has been divided – some have defended it, stating you essentially get two devices for the price of one.

For the Huawei Mate X, it’s priced at €2,299 (£2,000) which consists of 512GB of internal storage and 8GB of RAM. The Chinese manufacturer has hinted; however, there will be other variants down the line.

When can I get a foldable phone?

Samsung cleared up all the rumours about the release date of their Galaxy Fold at Unpacked in February. It’s due to go on sale in the US on the 26th April and the 3rd May in Europe.

Huawei are yet to confirm the release date of their Mate X, but have advised the foldable phone will launch in the UK on EE, Three and Vodafone, either in June, July or August.
