iOS 13 – rumoured features

iOS 13 is the next major software update due from Apple this September, which for the first time ever, will only be available to iPhones and iPods. Your iPad will receive a different software package – iPadOS.

If you’re curious about how your interface might change, we’ve listed below some of the exciting new features to come.

Compatibility

Firstly, it’s important to note which Apple devices iOS 13 will be compatible with. Providing your device is no more than 4 years old, you’ll be eligible for the update. Bad news for anyone with an older model, as you’ll be stuck with iOS 12 indefinitely.

Dark mode

The much anticipated dark mode feature, which was introduced to Mac devices in 2018, will be coming to both iPhone and iPad devices.

Dark mode means your screen’s hues will change from bright white and light grey to black and dark grey on all supported apps, which is particularly useful for night-time use and for prolonging battery life on OLED display devices (iPhone X, XS or XS Max).

It shouldn’t get confused with the yellow-tinting night shift mode, as dark mode will accompany the existing feature in the Control Centre. You can also set it to automatically turn on at night or at a custom set time.

Improvements to reminders

The Reminders app is getting a full makeover. In iOS 13 it appears to be better organised, prettier and includes shortcuts that make it easier to set reminders. Categories have been added for Today, Scheduled, All and Flagged which give a better overview of your tasks. The app will also have a shortcut toolbar to easily add times, dates, photos, documents, flags and locations to your reminders. The savvy Siri technology will even detect when you’re making plans over text message and prompt you to set reminders.

Swipe keyboard

At last, the Apple default keyboard now supports QuickType swipe typing. The new keyboard allows you to slide across your keyboard to form words, making typing much quicker and more efficient. So far the supported languages include English, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Portuguese.

Better performance speed

The rumours surrounding speed improvements with the iOS 13 update are just that – rumours. Nothing has yet been confirmed and it is very likely that if true, they will only apply to certain models of Apple devices or the ones awaiting release in September. Nonetheless, rumours have suggested the following:

  • 50% smaller app download sizes

  • 60% smaller app update sizes

  • 30% faster Face ID unlocking

  • 2 x faster app launching

Stronger security

One of the most improved features of iOS 13 is the enhanced security of your personal information, as you will be able to sign into more apps, accounts and services with your Face or Touch ID – much like you can use your Facebook or Google logins to sign up to various accounts. Some applications already have this feature, but it will become available for even more applications with additional privacy features, such as the option to share your email address or not. In the instance you select ‘no’ to sharing, Apple will create a random email address assigned to you to protect your privacy and personal information.

Improved photo & video editing

It is expected that there will be some updates to the portrait-mode lighting, which will give more control to existing pre-sets; and given that the portrait mode has not been great in comparison to other models, such as the Google Pixel or Samsung Galaxy, this is not very exciting. But there will also be improvements and extra features added to the Photos app which will enable more tweaks to images, without having to use third-party applications such as Lightroom.

In addition to this, for the first time in iOS history, you will now also be able to apply filters and effects to videos, without having to use a third-party app.
